HIGH ALTITUDE WINES

DISCOVER THE WINES OF THE FUTURE

Our high altitude wines Escol and Torb are born up in the unique slopes of the Muxella, to the south of the Andorra valleys, where the vineyard is closer to the sun and the air is uncorrupted. They feature unique aromas, imprinted by our accomplishments and hard work.

High-altitude wines are those that are produced from vineyards in high mountain terrain, at more than 900 meters above sea level. The climatology at this altitude gives greater acidity and a stronger varietal freshness.

At such altitude, the vineyards are exposed to a more intense solar radiation that favors             photosynthesis and stronger organoleptic properties. The resulting wines present better color and aroma. Besides, thanks to the marked contrast between day and nighttime temperatures, the maturation process is slower. Therefore, the resulting wines are more complex, rich in overtones and present a higher acidity and freshness.

The wind and the snow also play a fundamental role in the quality of high altitude wines. On the one hand, the wind fights the frost and helps to keep fungi and other mycotoxin contamination at bay. On the other hand, the snow provides a hydrological reserve during thawing.

ANDORRA WINES

A very little known fact is that Andorra has been producing wine since the Middle Ages.

As a matter of fact, there is historical evidence that the Borda Sabaté terrains belonged to the former villa where Benedictine monks first established in the Iberian Peninsula, under reliance of the now extinct Monastery of Sant Cerni de Tavèrnoles. Nowadays, all that’s left is the church in the town of Anserall, located 6 Km away from the Spanish border.

By the end of the 19th century, several events affected negatively the farming of vineyards across the Principality of Andorra, such as the phylloxera plague that impacted all of Europe, as well as the geographical challenges of high altitude terrains, bringing the vineyards to an end. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that vineyards were planted again in Andorra and currently there are 5 wineries producing high altitude wines.

ESCOL

OUR SIGNATURE WHITE

Altitude

1190m

Aging

in bottle

Varietal

100% Riesling

Temperature

12º to 14º

The Escol wine is also produced in the vineyards of Solà de la Muxella, at 1,190 meters above sea level. This single-varietal Riesling wine is aged in bottle. Riesling is one of the six historical noble grapes, which for some, is the finest variety of the white cluster.
Native from central Europe, this variety reaches its biggest potential in cold climates and high altitudes.
In sight, Escol presents a pale yellow complexion with clean and bright green hues. In nose, it provides aromas of white flowers, ripe apple and pear, as well as a fennel tinge. Over time, scents and notes of honey caramel and hydrocarbon become noticeable.
In mouth, Escol provides a large and intense palate, with strong structure and prominent acidity. Flowers and fruits are repeated, but a bit more mature. The honey caramel is met with more intensity and hydrocarbons reappear in the end. Persistency is long and pleasant.
The recommended serving temperature is between 12º and 14º. It goes well with salads, appetizers, white meats, fish and seafood, cheeses and even asian cuisine. Its pairing is also suggested with copious dishes, as the acidity reduces bloating.

Varietal

coupage of Cornalin, Merlot and Syrah

Temperature

14º to 16º

Torb, our signature red wine, is produced in the vineyards of Solà de la Muxella, in selected plots at 1,050 meters above sea level. It’s a coupage of Cornalin, Merlot and Syrah, aged in French oak barrels.
In sight, Torb is ruby with crimson edges. In nose, aromas of raspberry and blackberry materialize, as well as oak, smoke and spices such as black pepper and clove. Also noticeable are green leafed vegetal descriptors and hints reminiscent of the rainforest floor.
In mouth, the palate is dry, medium-bodied and presents an elevated acidity, providing vibrant and refreshing qualities. Tannin is rough and well balanced, not too generous nor too astringent, and the alcohol is completely integrated, which helps enhance its volume. Once again, the nuances present in nose appear: blackberries and raspberries, oak, smoke and spices.
The recommended serving temperature is between 14º and 17ª. It goes well with grilled soft meats, stewed meats, red berry sauces, pates, pasta with tomato sauce…
